Do You Need a Water Filter If You Already Have Treated City Water?

Yes, most homes on treated city water still benefit from home filtration. Municipal utilities make water safe to drink and meet federal standards, but their job stops at your property line. That leaves hardness, chlorine and chloramine taste, disinfection byproducts, and contaminants your own pipes add, like lead, along with emerging concerns such as PFAS that older treatment plants were never built to remove.

What city treatment actually does

Municipal water systems are built around one primary mission, which is preventing waterborne disease. They filter out sediment and particles, disinfect with chlorine or chloramine to kill bacteria and viruses, and monitor for regulated contaminants under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. In Southern California, much of the supply is imported from the Colorado River and Northern California, then blended and treated before it reaches your neighborhood.

This system works, and the water arriving at your meter is legally safe. But safe and ideal are not the same thing. Federal limits are set for public health across an entire population, and utilities are not responsible for taste, hardness, the byproducts of their own disinfection, or anything that happens after the water enters your home.

What treatment does not remove: hardness

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up as water moves through rock and soil. It is not a health hazard, so utilities do not remove it, and Southern California water is notably hard. You see the results as white scale on faucets and glassware, spots on dishes, soap that will not lather, dry skin and hair, and mineral buildup that shortens the life of water heaters, dishwashers, and coffee makers.
